The main four language skills to be developed are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Until recently, decisions about which of the linguistic skills should be emphasized in a foreign language program have been taken without seeking the opinions of language learners. To address this issue, the present research examined needs for learning the Russian language among students in a Malaysian public university. To achieve this research aim, a survey questionnaire was distributed among prospective learners of Russian. Four different statistical methods were performed to analyse the data, namely, the descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, the exploratory factor analysis and the reliability test. The findings from the descriptive statistics revealed that the respondents considered developing face-to-face interactive skills, such as the speaking and listening skills, as most important. The findings of the t-test suggested that demographic variables might have some influence on the students’ perceptions of the skills’ importance. For example, the students who spoke Malay at home placed a higher value on developing their ability to speak in a polite manner and to understand non-verbal communitive acts, such as gestures. The results of the exploratory factor analysis revealed that the language skills as perceived by the students formed several dimensions where interactive and non-interactive skills tended to form distinct clusters. This research concludes with a discussion of pedagogical implications to be drawn from the findings. </style>
<issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">5</style></issue><work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Original article</style></work-type><section><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">693-705</style></section></record><record><source-app name="Biblio" version="7.x">Drupal-Biblio</source-app><ref-type>17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Natalia  Zamkovaja</style></author><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Irina  Moissejenko</style></author></authors></contributors><titles><title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">IMPLEMENTATION OF TEXT ORIENTED APPROACH IN TEXTBOOKS ON RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN ESTONIA</style></title><secondary-title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Problems of Education in the 21st Century </style></secondary-title></titles><keywords><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">foreign languages</style></keyword><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">needs of students</style></keyword><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Russian language</style></keyword><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">speech activity</style></keyword><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">speech communication</style></keyword><keyword><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">text-centred approach</style></keyword></keywords><dates><year><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">2015</style></year><pub-dates><date><style  face="normal" font="default" size="100%">August/2015</style></date></pub-dates></dates><urls><web-urls><url><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">http://oaji.net/articles/2015/457-1441453614.pdf</style></url></web-urls></urls><volume><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">66</style></volume><pages><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Discontinuous</style></pages><language><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">eng</style></language>
<style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Create a text filled with personal meaning, designed in according to the norms of the Russian literary language – a task that must be put and solved in the lessons of the Russian language as a native language and a foreign language. These textbooks are developed by authors of the article.
In introduction authors prove necessity of working Latvian textbooks out, which could be addressed to the diaspora pupils.
In the first part of article authors analyze real problems, which have both teachers - in the process of teaching mother language and literature and pupils, which study the native language and literature at the circumstances of diaspora.
In the second part of the article authors describe the principles, taken as a textbooks forming basis, which can be useful in solving the problems mentioned:
- principle of dialogue of languages and cultures, which helps to promote the understanding of language and cultural variety of the world in pupils;
- communicative principle, which supposes the active pupil’s position during the study process; development of abilities to make an interpersonal dialogue to successfully participate in (including – dialogue with the culture text); considering perception of culture texts as active dialogue with their authors;
- principle of integrative approach (by the meaning of integration the coordination of skills, knowledge and representation in pupils is understood; these abilities could be developed in pupils during the study of language and literature);
 - principle of the educational content’s integrity and variability.
In the conclusion authors pay attention that the experience, which has been gained in the process of textbooks long-term approbation, allows to expand a culturological outlook of diaspora pupils, and also to purposefully and successfully improve dialogue, communicative, language and educational abilities in pupils.
