Prompted by the persistent complaints about the teachers’ lack of competencies that they should have acquired during their pre-service art teacher preparation, it specifically examined the VAC focusing on content, teaching methods, resources and assessment in VA and their relationship to the content gap IVATs are observing in VA teaching at the secondary school level. A qualitative approach was used to solicit participants’ views about the effectiveness of their pre-service teacher education. The research was supported by the constructivist and interpretive philosophies which offer IVATs as well as tutors with the opportunity to construct their knowledge through social interaction, communication, and inquiry learning. The research was carried out at Makerere University-School of Education, which was conveniently selected because all the IVATs who participated in this research were students in this University. The researchers used a probabilistic sampling technique which uses a simple random sampling. A lottery method was used to select the desired number of 30 out of the 42 IVATs in total. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 5 focus groups of second and third year IVATs. Findings revealed that there was inadequate content coverage, less use of active teaching methods, and concentration on summative assessment. The researchers recommended that the M.o.E.S together with NTCs restructure the VAC to allow adequate content coverage, use of active teaching methods and use of formative assessment for they equip the learners with knowledge and skills required in VA teaching. </style>
<issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">1</style></issue><work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Original article</style></work-type><section><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">118-132</style></section></record><record><source-app name="Biblio" version="7.x">Drupal-Biblio</source-app><ref-type>17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Jānis Dzerviniks</style></author><author><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Jānis Poplavskis</style></author></authors></contributors><titles><title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">ACQUISITION OF PHYSICS IN COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL: ACCENTS OF CONSTRUCTIVISM APPROACH</style></title><secondary-title><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Problems of Education in the 21st Century</style></secondary-title></titles><keywords><keyword><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">communication</style></keyword><keyword><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">constructivism</style></keyword><keyword><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">emotional experience</style></keyword></keywords><dates><year><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">2012</style></year><pub-dates><date><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">April/2012</style></date></pub-dates></dates><urls><web-urls><url><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">http://oaji.net/articles/2014/457-1409839792.pdf</style></url></web-urls></urls><volume><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">41</style></volume><language><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">eng</style></language>
<style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Nowadays in general education the emphasis is put on a pupil and his/her activity in learning. Gradually there are deepened pedagogical theories considering a pupil as an active constructor of knowledge. As the process of learning natural sciences at school is essential in the world cognition and it is needed to increase the effectiveness of learning natural sciences, including physics, as well as facilitate the attractiveness of these subjects, it is important to identify and evaluate contemporary didactic standpoints and opportunities for their application in the teaching and learning process. In the article the author analyzes the theoretical ideas of constructivism in the aspect of learning physics. The aim of the theoretical research is to evaluate the didactic standpoints of constructivism, put forward and describe the main principles of constructivism to be implemented in comprehensive secondary education. Within the research reflected in the article there is performed the analysis of scientific literature, analytical judgments are based on the previous empirical researches and using authors’ personal pedagogical experience.

This explains the fact many studies exist on the nature of scientific description, explanation, prediction and the relationship between them.
In the majority of studies on description and explanation in teaching, the emphasis is placed on the role of the teacher as explainer of chemical phenomena and less attention is paid to student’s activity in description and explanation of studied phenomena.
In this article we try to overcome such one-sidedness in addressing these cognitive procedures. We discuss the relationship between description, explanation, prediction in the study of chemical phenomena in high school, as well as the activity of teacher and student in constructing them. Taking into account the purposes of chemistry teaching, the characteristics of chemistry knowledge, the necessity of student-oriented training, the possibilities for change of learning environment, we propose a methodical model for description, explanation, prediction in the study of chemical substances and phenomena in the light of the basic ideas of constructivism.

These are natural sciences that teach the student to observe the nature and its phenomena objectively and without prejudice, to analyse and understand them, to formulate conclusions and foresee results. Children are investigators by nature and they actively search for information about their surroundings. They try to conceive of their environment with help of observation and experiment. Research work is an important and unsophisticated natural approach in teaching natural sciences in school. Natural sciences give everything that is necessary to develop and deepen students’ understanding about the surrounding world. They facilitate students’ thirst for knowledge and critical thinking; they depict relations between human beings and nature. Qualitative process of teaching of natural sciences at school gives students a possibility to acquire comprehensive basic knowledge and skills in the sphere of science contributing to development of the student, who will become a technologically educated member of the society, who will be encouraged to move forward in the sphere of science and technology. In order to promote the quality of education, the reform of basic education is being realised. The basis of the reform in subjects of natural sciences is orientation and direction of study content towards research work. In the article the author examines changes of pedagogic opinions in the process of teaching natural sciences, analyses students’ points of view about the progress of acquisition of proficiency in natural sciences during the reform of content of basic education content.
The aim of the research is to find out problems occurring in the process of studying of natural sciences in basic school and to emphasise facilitating development of students’ proficiency in natural sciences.
Research methods: examination and analysis of literature, inquiring.
Results of the research: the author gathered information about today’s teaching process in subjects of natural sciences, evaluated the process of acquisition of natural science in basic schools in Latvia.
